The Importance of Eye Care and Check-Ups

You only get one set of eyes. Many people associate 20/20 vision with healthy eyes and that couldn't be any further from the truth. The reality is that many eye diseases have no symptoms in the early stages. At Des Plaines Eye Care Center, we understand the importance of eye care and check-ups. We highly recommend that our patients get a routine checkup from Dr. Nakhlis.

The Importance of Eye Care and Check-Ups

Let's start with vision first, which shouldn't be confused with eye health. During a checkup, we will see if you have any refractive errors that need to be corrected. If you have any refractive errors, we will prescribe glasses or contacts to help you see better. It is also important to come to your routine eye appointments if you already wear glasses. Not updating a prescription can lead to more problems. But vision is only one part of your eye health.

Screening for Eye Diseases

The other major component of an eye exam is checking for serious eye diseases. These can include cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. As we stated earlier, these eye conditions are nearly impossible to notice by yourself. A dilated eye exam is needed to look at the structures inside your eyes and detect any warning signs. This is why it's so important to get a dilated eye exam from us routinely, even if you have perfect vision.

What To Expect

We will begin by asking our patients a series of questions, including:

  • How is your vision?
  • Is there any change from your last visit?
  • Have you noticed any visual changes in the past six months or a year?
  • Are you having trouble with daily activities, such as reading or driving?

We will also update any medications you are currently taking. The actual exam involves a series of tests that will help us detect any problems or issues that may have developed since your last visit. We will use a variety of tools to complete these tests using the latest technology to give a proper diagnosis.
